Daily Metaverse #93: AR to make the world an artist's canvas

You know what we don’t talk about enough here? AR. This being primarily a news roundup, that’s an unfortunate reflection that metaverse news is primarily about digital-first experiences, like VR and metaverse platforms like The Sandbox and Decentraland.

That’s largely due to tech - those platforms are accessible via a regular computer, and VR headsets are readily available. AR, on the other hand, is still mostly relegated to prototypes and beta programs (see Magic Leap and Zuckerberg’s latest tech demo) plus HoloLens for the enterprise.

Eventually, though, AR will be in reach of everyone. I have no doubt that in my lifetime we’ll get the form factor down to a contact lens that can be comfortably worn all day. Much sooner than that, I would expect to see some lightweight glasses that become increasingly ubiquitous.

When that happens, we’ll really unlock the power of the digital world in the physical one. Subtitles of people speaking foreign languages, live directions and digital art appearing as one with the world will be commonplace.

Our first article is an art show overlaid on Times Square via AR, and it’s certainly something I expect to see more of - after all, the idea that you can use any of the most prominent places in the world as your gallery without fees or permission is pretty cool if you’re an artist.

AR Metaverse takes over New York’s Time Square
I’m more into the concept than the actual floating crystal babies…

It’ll be amazing to see what artists can imagine with the world as their canvas. This example is just floating art exhibits, but you could certainly see it be more integrated with its surroundings - perhaps making all of the buildings appear in the style of a sci-fi cyberpunk world or the old west.

AR will very literally change the world around us, and I certainly look forward to seeing it continue to develop.
